Røldal. 13th century wooden Church (stavkyrkje)

After another pass, descend to the valley where lies the glassy surface lake Recalcuate (Røldalsvatnet), located at an altitude of 380 metres above sea level.

Main fame of the town brings one of the oldest buildings in Norway - wooden Church - stave Church (Røldal stavkyrkje map) of the thirteenth century.

Church built between 1200 and 1250 bears the name of St. Olaf. In 1629, for the decoration of the Church was invited painter from Silesia Wroclaw Handsel Gottfried (Gottfried Hendtzchell). In 1913-1918 year the Church was restored, when removing the wood paneling and discovered these murals. Unfortunately, to get inside failed.

In the middle ages Røldal was a major pilgrimage destination after Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. It was believed that the crucifix in this Church healed the sick people. This is one of eleven extant in Norway stave churches.
